The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) is a government agency under Sweden’s Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, specializing in meteorology, hydrology, and oceanography. It provides research, services, and business solutions in these fields.
Founded in 1873 as Statens Meteorologiska Centralanstalt, SMHI evolved through a merger with the Hydrographic Office in 1919 and adopted its current name in 1945. Initially based in Stockholm, the agency relocated to Norrköping in 1975. WMO, GWP and SMHI seek to strengthen cooperation in other specific areas of mutual interest as follows:
- a) Design, development and operation of Flood monitoring and prediction system
- b) Technical design and implementation of Impact-based flood forecasting and early warning decision support systems
- c) Support to Training and Capacity Building on IFM strategies flood forecasting and early warning systems
- d) Analytics and Dissemination of flood forecast and early warning information (incl. quality assessments)
- e) Joint project development and implementation under the overall scope of IFM
