Iran Water Resources Management Company (IWRMC)

The Iran Water Resources Management Company (IWRMC), under the Ministry of Energy, is responsible for managing, conserving, and optimizing the nation’s water resources. It enforces the Law of Fair Distribution of Water and other regulations to ensure sustainable and efficient water use across the country. 

With a focus on environmental sustainability, IWRMC oversees projects such as water supply and transfer, irrigation and drainage, dam safety, flood control, and hydropower development. The organization also conducts extensive research, monitors water quality and quantity, and develops frameworks for effective water resource governance. By promoting efficient water consumption practices and technical innovation, IWRMC strives to address the country’s water challenges. 

IWRMC fosters collaboration with domestic and international organizations, supports private sector participation in water-related projects, and emphasizes training and capacity building. Through its comprehensive approach, the company ensures the development, operation, and maintenance of water infrastructure to meet national and regional needs. 

Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM-Tehran) 

Established in 2002 under the auspices of UNESCO, the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM-Tehran) operates as a Category 2 Centre headquartered in Tehran, Iran. Its mandate focuses on advancing urban water management through scientific research, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and regional collaboration, aligning with UNESCO’s strategic water-related programs. The Centre’s agreement with UNESCO has been renewed periodically, with the current phase covering 2019–2024. 

RCUWM’s core activities include promoting research on urban water issues, coordinating cooperative initiatives, organizing training and awareness programs, and providing technical consultancy. By leveraging regional expertise and UNESCO’s networks, RCUWM contributes to sustainable urban water solutions and policy development across the region.

WMO, GWP, RCUWM and IWRMC seek to strengthen cooperation in other specific areas of mutual interest as follows:  

  1. Taking Joint Measures to implement integrated flood and drought management at regional levels.
  2. Cooperation for the implementation of flood management in Iran, with the priority of Kashkan Basin 
  3. Cooperation to implement integrated drought management in Iran. 
  4. Provision of the presence of Iranian experts in seminars, webinars, educational workshop and international forums. 
  5. Joint project proposal development and implementation under the overall scope of IFM and IDM supporting the basis for receiving funds for the implementation of integrated flood and draught management approaches at local, national and transboundary levels. 
  6. Data and information exchanges and sharing best practices on data quality control and dissemination. 
  7. Capacity development related to the Integrated Flood and Drought Management including sharing of success stories and lesson learned at national and regional levels.
